Remember “Muhammad Bombhead Comes to Life”?

Back in July, an Afghan suicide bomber used a turban to conceal the explosives that he used to kill the mayor of Kandahar. We had the story here. What a disgusting way to commit homicide.

It’s happened again. This time, the target was former Afghan President Burhanuddin Rabbani. He had also served as the political head of the Northern Alliance and an associate of Defense Minister Ahmad Shah Massood, who had also been assassinated in a suicide attack on September 9, 2001.

Now I have no illusions about Rabbani, Massoud, or anybody else in Afghan public life. Hard-core mujahideen all; none were or are secularists, none have respected the rights of non-Muslims, of dissidents, or of women and girls. But even in those dismal environs, the Taliban are in a class by themselves when it comes to perfidy.

Suicide Bomber Kills Ex-Afghan President Rabbani

KABUL, Afghanistan – A suicide attacker with a bomb in his turban posed as a Taliban peace envoy and assassinated a former Afghan president who for the past year headed a government council seeking a political settlement with the insurgents.

Tuesday’s attack, carried out in former President Burhanuddin Rabbani’s Kabul home, dealt a harsh blow to attempts at ending a decade of war. The killing of Rabbani, an ethnic Tajik and one of the wise old men of Afghan politics, will blunt efforts to keep in check the regional and ethnic rivalries that help feed the insurgency.

President Hamid Karzai cut short a visit to the United Nations and called on Afghans to remain unified in the face of Rabbani’s “martyrdom.” An emergency Cabinet meeting was called for Wednesday.

The attack came days after a daytime assault by insurgents on the U.S. Embassy and NATO headquarters that deepened a sense of insecurity in the capital.

NATO said in a statement that two suicide bombers were involved in the attack on Rabbani, both of them men who had feigned a desire to reconcile with the government. It was unclear if a second bomber was able to detonate his explosives.

Afghan officials, however, insisted there was only one attacker. Four men were wounded, including a key presidential adviser, said Mohammad Zahir, the head of criminal investigations for the Kabul police. Initial reports had four bodyguards killed but Zahir said those were incorrect.

Close friends of Rabbani said that the former president returned from a trip to Iran to meet with a man who had been described as a high-ranking Taliban contact. The visitor, a young man, was shown into the house by two of Rabbani’s associates at the Afghan High Peace Council, who insisted that he did not need to be fully searched, said a friend who spoke anonymously because he was not a spokesman.

When Rabbani appeared, the man shook the former president’s hand and bowed as a sign of respect, said Fazel Karim Aimaq, a former lawmaker from Kunduz province and friend of Rabbani.

“Then his turban exploded,” Aimaq said. The blast broke windows in Rabbani’s home and shook nearby houses.

As the leader of the anti-Taliban Northern Alliance, Rabbani sought a political deal with the Taliban — with U.S. blessing — and he will be hard to replace soon. His death could unleash a well of resentment among some senior Northern Alliance members, who accuse Karzai of colluding with the Taliban.

Days before he was brutally killed, Former Afghan President and head of the High Peace Council Burhanuddin Rabbani told RT’s sister channel Russia Al Youm that despite the difficulties, he had high hopes for the peace process in his country. President Rabbani led Afghanistan during the 1990s. Most recently, he ran the country’s peace council, attempting to negotiate a political solution between the government and the Taliban. The High Peace Council was intended to open a dialogue with insurgents who had been trying to bring down his government since the US-led invasion overthrew their regime in late 2001. It was inaugurated in 2010, amid mounting reports of secret peace talks with Taliban leaders and key insurgent groups. Delivering his acceptance speech, Rabbani said he was “confident” that peace was possible — and he continued to believe and work towards achieving that peace until the end.

Big Government: Years Later, Land Seized in Kelo Decision Used for Debris Dump

In 2005, Kelo v. City of New London made eminent domain infamous. The widely reviled Supreme Court ruling gave the go ahead for the city of New London to use eminent domain for taking private property in order that it be given to a private company for “economic development.”

The public response was one of outrage. Facing the potential wrath of voters, politicians across the country moved to add new protections against such abusive seizures. But that wasn’t enough to save the homes of the folks in New London, whose property never would be developed. Pfizer, the intended beneficiary of the land theft, walked away years ago from their development plans.

Now, to add new insult to injury, the vacant lot is a dump. Literally.

Following hurricane Irene, the city designated the site as a place to dump storm debris, and citizens can be seen doing just that in this video on the local paper’s website.

Doesn’t that make you feel all warm inside? The Supreme Court reassured us in Kelo that the government orchestrated theft “would be executed pursuant to a “carefully considered” development plan.” What they forgot to mention is that careful consideration from politicians is worth about as much as the city’s new debris dump, which is to say: diddly squat.

Admiral Stavridis and Admiral Di Paola visit NATO Forces Headquarters in Kosovo (KFOR)

Admiral James G. Stavridis, NATO Supreme Allied Commander Europe and Commander U.S. European Command, together with Admiral Giampaolo di Paola, the Chairman of the Military Committee of NATO, visited KFOR Headquarters and troops in Kosovo on August 29, 2011.

Both Admirals were welcomed by Major General Erhard Bühler, Commander KFOR, at KFOR Headquarters in Film City in Pristina. Gen Bühler briefed them about the general situation in Kosovo and the developments in the North of Kosovo after the recent unrest in July when a Crossing Point in the North was attacked and part of the infrastructure destroyed.

When Admiral Stavridis was asked about this incident during a radio interview with Radio KFOR he said, “Anytime people resort to violence it’s a mistake and it does not move us forward. So I condemn the [ethnic Serbian] violence in the strongest terms. I am very happy that our KFOR forces were able to help restore order and I look forward to a continuing dialogue so that we can resolve problems like this without violence.”

After the visit to the Headquarters, the delegation went to the troubled Crossing Point to look at the situation on the ground and visit the KFOR and EULEX units who are now patrolling the area.

Major General Bühler, who is completing one year in Command of KFOR and leaving the mission in a few weeks, was thanked by the SACEUR for his outstanding commitment and expert crisis management during the last weeks. “I think General Bühler has done an excellent job. One thing that we look for always is that he has been able to maintain a safe and secure environment.”

David Letterman was recently targeted by an Internet jihadi:

Internet jihadist calls on Muslims to cut off David Letterman’s tongue

David Letterman has become terror target No. 1.

The new threat comes from a frequent poster on Islamic jihadist forums, Umar al Basrawi, who implored American Muslims to “cut the tongue of this lowly Jew and shut it forever,” according to the Middle East Media Research Institute, a non-profit that monitors online jihadists.

Letterman, who isn’t Jewish, became the object of al-Basrawi’s ire when the late-night funnyman told a joke about the death of Osama bin Laden and al Qaeda’s search for his replacement.

“So [al Qaeda] picked a successor to Osama bin Laden and his name was Ilyas Kashmiri,” Letterman said during his opening monologue on June 8th, “well, guess what, he was blown up by an American drone.”

“It wasn’t going to work anyways because they got off to a rocky start with this guy,” Letterman continued, “he botched up the story of Paul Revere.”

Apparently, comparing the dead terrorist to Sarah Palin was one step too many for al-Basrawi, who ended his online rant with, “We ask Allah to paralyze his tongue and grant the sincere monotheists his neck. Oh Allah, amen.”

He then compared Letterman fate to the successful hit of Rabbi Meir Kahane, who was called by Islamic radicals in Brooklyn in 1990.

“To the righteous Muslims in America: Isn’t there among you [a man like] Sayyid Nosair, the Egyptian, who can cut off the tongue of this lousy Jew and silence him forever, just like Sayyid – may Allah hasten his release – did to his fellow Jew, [Rabbi Meir] Kahane?” al-Basrawi wrote in a translation provided by MEMRI.

Letterman is joking about a “fatwa” but he obviously has no clue what a fatwa is! The dude needs to be “ejumacated” about Islam, but I have no idea how to get through to him. A fatwa – or any jihadi threat, for that matter – is not the usual type of threat to a celebrity from some run-of-the-mill crazy person, and it has nothing in common with pranks perpetrated by some envious rival. Yeah, I know some jihadis ARE crazy, but a death threat from jihadis is no laughing matter!

Letterman should realize that jihadi threats against the media are also an attack on our freedoms of speech and of the press.

If they get a couple of local TV stations and two or three newspaper reporters to an event, that’s “good coverage.” But at today’s Romney event — held at the home of a local businessman — it was a totally different level of coverage: The Philadelphia Inquirer, the San Francisco Chronicle, Gwen Ifill, Charlie Cook, Al Hunt, Carl Cameron of Fox News, etc. I counted no fewer than 12 TV or video cameras recording Romney’s speech.

That is the power of the MSM. It decides who the GOP front-runner is (and who they want it to be) and allocates coverage accordingly. Stacy McCain has covered Mitt Romney, but he has not limited his coverage to him. He has covered Rick Santorum, Herman Cain, Rick Perry, Michelle Bachmann and Tim Pawlenty.
This more than anything else highlights the importance of bloggers and social media, they are the best way to bypass the elites determination to convert convention wisdom into fact.  RTWT

If you watched the Ames debate on Fox News, you may have noticed that the moderators tried to make it pretty much the Romney/Gingrich/Pawlenty/Paul show, giving little time to (my first choice) Rick Santorum, or Herman Cain (and they mods were basically asses to Michelle Bachmann). They also gave a lot of attention to former Obama operative Jon Huntsman. Their coverage of the debate on the morning show Fox and Friends was even worse. Neither the hosts nor their guests even mentioned Rick Santorum from what I saw, despite the fact that he did really well in the debate. Fox, like the rest of the MSM has an agenda, and that agenda is not to report events, but to engineer their outcomes. …What a difference a few short years make. In 2006, Muslims across the globe were incensed over Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten’s publishing of the Mo Toons. Which resulted in the deaths of over 100 people. As psychopathic as it sounds, yes… you read that right – cartoon related deaths, their blood on the hands of arrogant, enraged Muslims, demanding all bow to allah fubar.

The most popular Mo Toon is of course, the Mohammed Turban Bomb toon by Kurt Westergaard…

Now recently, in a most ironic twist of events, a Taliban suicide bomber assassinated the mayor of Kandahar, Afghanistan, Ghulam Haider Hamidi with get this –an exploding turban bomb he was wearing.

He liked to cast himself as one of the few honest men in Kandahar, a plucky troublemaker not afraid to stick a finger in the eye of authority or vested interests.

And in the end, those traits might have contributed to the brutal death of Ghulam Haider Hamidi, the outspoken mayor of Kandahar city.

He had survived previous attempts to kill him, but a suicide bomber with explosives concealed in his turban assassinated Hamidi on Wednesday.

Hamidi, 65, was the third high-ranking official in the volatile southern Afghan province to be murdered this year. The president’s half brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, and the provincial police chief, Gen. Khan Mohammad Mujahid, were killed earlier.

The Taliban claimed responsibility, saying it was revenge over a land dispute involving the demolition of 200 illegally constructed homes in the city’s vast northern slum — an act that insurgents claimed had caused the death of two children.

That alleged zoning disputes continue to be settled with bombs in Kandahar is setback for the U.S., which took full control of the province from the Canadian army a few weeks ago.

Hamidi, who spent 30 years in exile in Arlington, Va., as an accountant, said in recent interviews with The Canadian Press that he knew he was marked for death but accepted the risk as his way to give back to the city he loved.

He was appointed Kandahar mayor in 2007. “I didn’t do my job for Ahmed Wali Karzai. I did not do it for Mr. Hamid Karzai. I do my job because I owe this city,” Hamidi said last December.

“I (was) born here. I grew up here. I eat from this city. I was educated in this province and I had good times here. Now in the last times of my life, I want to spend it here, serving my city and city citizens.”

“I could go back to America, but I choose to be here,” he said. “I will fight, fight corruption (and) those corrupt people. This my city. Kandahar is my city and I will die here.”
