Don’t know enough about Islam and Jihad? Need more information?

Here’s a list of Christmas reading for you,,maybe even a list of gifts to some of those friends who think you are making all this up perhaps?

Note the international authors: from Australia to Europe.

They can’t all be wrong!

From Bill Muelenberg’s Culture Watch – A comprehensive guide to what we are up against.

There are many areas of concern when it comes to standing up for a free and democratic West. One of the biggest threats is posed by the ongoing activities of creeping sharia and stealth jihad. Whether by demographics, outright terrorism, or indirect jihad, the West is under assault and it needs to be aware of the threat.

A number of important works continue to come forth from the presses, and these are some of the newer and better volumes worth recommending. They cover a number of related issues, offering theological, political, historical, legal, social, cultural and geo-political considerations.

All have been penned in the last few years, and all are well worth getting to understand the situation the West now finds itself in. Some are written by Christians, and some by secular authors. Some deal with political and ideological concerns while others look at religious and theological issues.

I offer these twenty books in no particular order, but do suggest that you try to get at least a few of these important works in order to better understand the new Cold War we are in.

Durie, Mark, The Third Choice. Deror Books, 2010.
Mark Durie is one of Australia’s leading experts on Islam. He has written much on Islam in general and dhimmitude in particular. The condition of Christians in Muslim nations is getting worse, and believers will fare no better as Islam gets further entrenched in the West. Here is a first-rate look at the issue from historical, theological and pastoral perspectives. We ignore the warnings here at our own peril.

Ye’or, Bat, Europe, Globalization, and the Coming of the Universal Caliphate. Fairleigh Dickinson University Press, 2011.
Egyptian-born Ye’or is perhaps the world’s leading authority on dhimmitude. This book is a continuation of her very important 2005 volume, Eurabia: The Euro-Arab Axis. Here she shows how the Islamic advance in Europe has only intensified since six years ago. She carefully demonstrates how Islam is wielding tremendous power through the EU, the UN and other bodies. This is a wake-up call for Europe and the West.

Goldman, David, How Civilizations Die: (And Why Islam Is Dying Too). Regnery, 2011.
In this very important volume a number of themes are discussed, all tied in with demographics. Religion and fertility are intertwined, and when people lose faith, they stop having children. That is how civilisations commit suicide. But when Muslim women become educated and literate, they too tend to abandon their faith and stop having kids, so even the Muslim world is now in upheaval in this regard. This book is must reading.

Geller, Pamela, Stop the Islamization of America. WND Books, 2011.
As the subtitle says, this is “A practical guide to the resistance.” And resistance is certainly needed. America is being Islamised big time, with stealth jihad occurring with increased intensity. Geller documents the many ways in which this is taking place, and offers some much-needed strategies to turn it around.

Reilly, Robert, The Closing of the Muslim Mind. ISI Books, 2010.
Why is scientific inquiry almost non-existent in the Muslim world? Why does open debate and genuine intellectual inquiry seem to be so hard to come by in the Islamic world? Why is genuine peace so illusive in the Middle East and the Muslim world? Why does Islam seem to be trapped in a seventh century mindset? These and other issues are nicely dealt with in this important volume.

Muthuswamy, Moorthy, Defeating Political Islam. Prometheus Books, 2009.
Muthuswamy argues that we in the West are in a new Cold War. There is an international Islamic political agenda being financed and promoted by Iran, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, with a war of ideas just as important as any armed conflict. The West needs to fully engage in this ideological battle, and urgently take steps to reverse the main gains of the Islamists.

Babbin, Jed, In the Words of Our Enemies. Regnery, 2007.
Just what do the Islamists and the jihadists actually want? What are their goals, their aims, their strategies and their plans? Actually, it is not hard to discover the answers to these questions, because they have in fact told us all this and more. Here Babbin simply compiles what the enemies of the West have been saying, what they hope to achieve, and how they seek to go about it. Sobering reading.

Bennett William and Seth Leibsohn, The Fight of Our Lives: Knowing the Enemy, Speaking the Truth, and Choosing to Win the War Against Radical Islam. Thomas Nelson, 2011.
In this well documented volume the authors lay out for us the dangers we face with Islamic terrorism, and show us how we might better deal with it. They examine a number of issues, and make it clear that we must be sure of who our enemy is and what it is they want. A brief but helpful look at the struggle we all face.

Shoebat, Walid, Why We Want to Kill You: The Jihadist Mindset and How to Defeat It. Top Executive Media, 2007.
As a former Islamic terrorist, Shoebat knows a thing or two about the forces at war against the West. Here he describes in detail the terrorist mind, the plan and goals of the Islamists, and how “moderate” Muslims are paving the way for stealth jihad. Must reading from an authority on the topic.

Gabriel, Brigitte, They Must Be Stopped. St. Martin’s Press, 2008.
The author of the very important 2006 volume Because They Hate, here continues her clarion call for the West to wake up and face this threat head on. The former Arabic news program anchor knows full well the struggle we face, and here offers numerous helpful proposals on how we can keep the West free and prevent stealth jihad from succeeding.

Sultan, Wafa, A God Who Hates: The Courageous Woman Who Inflamed the Muslim World Speaks Out Against the Evils of Islam. St. Martin’s Press, 2009.
The author spent 30 years in Syria and knows firsthand the oppressive and misogynist world of Islam. She now resides in the US and regularly debates Muslims, informing us about the deplorable condition of women in Islam, and how women in the West are also in danger. A revealing and eye-opening volume.

Weigel, George, Faith, Reason and the War Against Jihadism. Doubleday, 2007.
Weigel is always well worth reading, and in this insightful volume we find a helpful essay on the struggle the West is engaged in, and how we must face it. Historical, political and religious considerations are examined as he discusses how we can confront this challenge. Philosophical reflections are combined with public policy proposals in this wide-ranging work.

McCarthy, Andrew, The Grand Jihad: How Islam and the Left Sabotage America. Encounter Books, 2010.
Leftists have long ago declared war on America, as have the Islamists. In fact, we often find them working together arm in arm to achieve their aims. In this very thorough and well-documented volume McCarthy looks at how these two movements have combined to wage war on the US and subvert its constitutional democracy. A real wake-up call to the imminent dangers the US and the West face.

Spencer, Robert, The Complete Infidel’s Guide to the Koran. Regnery, 2009.
The Koran is a closed book to most people – even to most Muslims. Here the American expert on Islam provides an in-depth view of what the Koran teaches and how we are to understand it. It offers detailed chapters on all the crucial issues, such as Islam and violence, Islam’s treatment of women, Islam and Christianity, and the Koran’s treatment of Jews. A helpful and revealing volume.

Warner, Bill, Sharia Law for Non-Muslims. Center for the Study of Political Islam, 2010.
In this thin volume (just 48 pages) Bill Warner outlines what sharia is and how it relates to how women are treated, how jihad is waged, and how infidels are dealt with. Also examined are sharia finance, Islamic family law, and so on. He demonstrates how creeping sharia is making huge inroads in America and the West and the very real threat this poses.

Boykin, William et al, Shariah: The Threat to America. The Center for Security Policy, 2010.
This is a lengthy, detailed and careful study of what sharia is and how it operates. This study is the result of an indepth analysis by a team of security policy experts, and makes it clear what very real dangers America is confronted with. A very comprehensive and meticulous work which makes it clear that we are not just up against “extremists” but a political and unyielding religion.

Bawer, Bruce, Surrender. Doubleday, 2009.
Surrender is exactly what the West is doing in the face of radical Islam, especially Europe and the UK. In this well-argued and well-researched volume Bawer shows how we are undermining our own efforts as we attempt to appease the Islamists. We are surrendering our freedoms, our values and our beliefs as we cave in to the demands of those pushing for a global caliphate and universal sharia law. An important wake-up call.

Janson, Vickie, Ideological Jihad. Castle Publishing, 2009.
This Melbourne writer has long been involved in reaching Muslims. Here she examines how Islam is pushing its agenda ideologically, and in particular, she examines the writings and influence of Muslim apologist, Waleed Aly. She shows how in spite of the smooth-sounding propaganda, Islam and Christianity are on two different roads, and can never meet. She dissects the various myths being perpetrated by Muslim apologists, and makes the case for the uniqueness of Christ. A helpful response to the misinformation and half-truths being peddled in our mainstream media by Muslim activists.

Solomon, Sam and E al Maqdisi, Modern Day Trojan Horse: The Islamic Doctrine of Immigration. ANM, 2009.
Armed jihad is not the only way the Islamists can defeat a nation. There are numerous other ways in which stealth jihad occurs. How an Islamic minority can consolidate power in a Western nation and eventually take it over is the focus of this work. Plenty of Arabic sources are utilised as the authors solidly make their case for this very real type of jihad.

Phares, Walid, The War of Ideas. Palgrave Macmillan, 2007.
The war between democracy and Islamism is the supreme battle of our time. This volume offers a learned, incisive and careful look at this conflict, and how the two sets of ideas can never be reconciled. A very valuable discussion of the ideological crisis of our age, and how the West can defeat this dangerous foe.

Subject: Sorry, it’s time to spill my guts!
From: William Dorich
To: Sparta

If Truth hurts, this post will be painful.

I am a Serb who has proven time and again for the past 25 years, that I have been willing to place my life on the line to defend the Serbian people. As the recipient of more than 15 death threats in those days of article writing and over 300 radio and television interviews in which the FBI acknowledged that they were tapping my telephone “to defend me,” I know the end result of what that episode did to me, my family, our security and our peace of mind. No one can compensate me for that level of political contempt.

I received hundreds of “at a boy… go get um!” from countless Serbs across the country who wanted me to continue the fight but who themselves were unwilling cowards in defending the rights of our people. It was easy to goad me to respond to hideous media distortions and propaganda when they had no stake in the reaction, or worse, were unwilling to put their identity on the line or to offer a response that might jeopardize their families, but, it was acceptable that I place myself and my family at risk. Was defending Serbia a worthy task or was I simply the most stupid Serb in the United States? So many Serbs fled Serbia and managed to escape the violence then were not willing to then defend those left behind? If I was merely defending cowards then I was the biggest of all fools.

I never expected the Synod of Serbian Orthodox Bishops and His Grace Bishop Jovan to bestow the Order of St. Save on me for writing my book Kosovo in 1992 that raised over $200,000 that I gladly donated to Serbian victims. I did that book as a labor of love. I did not earn one single penny for that effort. But in my wildest dreams I never expected that publishing 2,000 copies of Kosovo would take 8 years to sell? Shame on American Serbs that any of you believe that someone else should buy such books but not you. I tried through various article to encourage Serbs to purchase the book and donate it to their local newspapers and university libraries so that future generations would have a source of Serbian views. That fell on deaf ears.

Serbs would have the audacity to say to me… “Oh, I already know about Kosovo.” To which I always responded, “Ah, but do your children and grandchildren know about Kosovo?” But Serbs don’t seem to think about the impact of what this demonization of Serbs has done to them or their future generations who will be punished for the “Sins of the father.” There are Serbs today who are being denied educational and professional opportunities merely because they have Serbian sir names, and no Serb in this generation seems to give a damn that their children and grandchildren will be punished for these crimes. Not since Hitler has an entire ethnic population been demonized with collective guilt, but yet we Serbs sit here on our hands and take it in silence? Pretending that we are not impacted by bigotry, racism or ethnic hatred is foolish.

As a small publisher in Los Angeles for the past 26 years I have published over 175 books, including Witness to War: Images of the Persian Gulf War for the Los Angeles Times that won a Pulitzer. Nine of those books have been my own on Balkan history, music and culture of which I have sold a grand total 4,325 copies, representing purchases of 480 copies per 9 books in the United States. The average purchase of 480 copies of those 9 books never came close to cover the expense of writing and publishing those books, but who cares, it was not your money?

I can tell you exactly how many of the 1.2 million Serbs in the United States have purchased a book from my company, GM Books, and the count is very disturbing. In the past ten years 740 Serbs have purchase a book from gmbooks.com. That number represents 74 purchases per year! Living in Los Angeles for 50 years I know for a fact that Jews will drive blocks to support a Jewish business, but for some crazy reason Serbs will not walk across the street to help a fellow Serb? Are we really this sick as an ethnic community?

Do I expect Serbs to support me? No, that would be really naïve, but since so many Serbs in this country support my public effort one would expect that this support would include buying the books I write in order to support the Serbian cause. But, again that appears to be stupidity on my part, Serbs think only of their self-interests. And we wonder why the world hates us? What is there to admire?

The sales of my new book, Serbia: Faces & Places is a disgrace as most Serbs don’t give a damn if I survive as a writer or die in the process. Future Serbian writers and artists beware. Apparently I am expected to just keep putting my life and my income on the line to defend Serbian interests? That dumb idea has come to a n abrupt halt today.

The investment to do this book was in excess of $50,000 but please don’t insult me further to believe that I have this kind of money to burn, this is major savings of mine and my coauthor going down the drain as you insultingly tell me what a wonder book this is but don’t believe strong enough in it to make a $25 purchase. Serbs are proving to not just be cheap but seem to suffer from a total lack of vision. With the demonization of the Serbs that has taken place in the world this past decade one would believe that a major book that shows the Serbs and their culture for the first time in a positive light would be a welcome publication. Apparently that was just a pipe dream of this author.

At St. Steven’s Cathedral in Alhambra where I have been a member for 40 years we have sold a grand total 37 copies. What a disgrace that those who pretend to be my friend can betray my effort in such a callous manner. At. St. Sava church in San Gabriel where I recently spent months produced and publish their 100th anniversary book I have sold 2 copies of Faces & Places. At the Diocese Days of Western America recently held at St. Steven Cathedral where over 400 people from the western states attended I sold 14 copies. This is in a Serbian community that represents more than 250,000 Serbs. The lack of support for Serbian artists and writers shows a level of contempt that no ethnic community should tolerate. With 1.2 million Serbs in the United States am I the fool to expect the sale of 3,000 copies ?

Placing my information nationally on Facebook and Twitter was like placing Faces & Places in a black hole as even fewer sales have been generated through these website links. Do all of you Serbs out there feel that someone else should buy my books except you? Do I expect too much that Serbs should be supporting all Serbian artists, writers and creative people in our community? There are so few of us.

I feel demoralized that I find the need to expose my fellow Serbs for this hideous flaw in their ethnic character but maybe it is time to show the world that Serbs may not deserve being defended if they care so little for each other ,or, for those who place defending them above the safety and financial well-being of their own lives.

Subject: Fw: Sorry, it’s time to spill my guts!

Dear Friends,

When the war against the Serbs first broke out in Bosnia, I was sent Bill Dorich’s publication, The Suppressed Serbian Voice and the Free Press in America. I was so impressed and so moved by the articles, the horror pictures of the atrocities committed against the Serbian people during World War II and the present war against them that I contacted Bill and from that moment, our friendship grew. To be honest, at that time, I had absolutely no idea what a Serb was, but after reading the publication, I became passionate enough to jump in with both feet to defend my Orthodox Christian brothers and sisters.

At that time, email had not yet come into play and for the first several years, we contacted each other by phone or by fax – perhaps three to four times a day to exchange information and the letter writing, the commentaries and the articles began.

The other influence I had in my life regarding the Serbian people was my son, Jim, www.savekosovo.org.

So, between the two, I have tried to defend the Serbian people to the best of my abilities.

I will tell you that there have been times when I wanted to throw up my hands out of frustration and say, “Stop the world, I want to get off!” but then I remember the quote by the 17th century scholar, Edmund Burke, who said, “All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing,” and with that, I am right back in the battle against the evil that has enshrouded not just Serbia and Kosovo, but my own country and Europe. It is estimated that by 2050, (and now even earlier!) Islam will be the primary religion in Europe and if we try to defend ourselves, we are called bigots and racists It is painful to see our most holy of churches, Agia Sophia, surrounded by four minarets – signifying Islam’s triumph over Orthodoxy, but when the 9/11 mosque is built, we can thank “useful idiots” like Mayor Bloomberg (I believe it was Lenin who talked about “useful idiots”) who is helping to build that mosque, Islam’s Jewel in the Crown, Islam’s final triumph!

So there you have it briefly and my admiration for Bill continues.

Sparta

Okay, everybody…

Here’s what I’d like you to do.

If you have some money to spend, buy some copies of these books. Read them yourself. Give them to your children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. Talk to your local librarian and find out the procedure for donating copies to the library so that they will be on the shelves as an antidote to the continuing Serb-bashing that still pervades the media and the political sphere. If your church has a library, ask your pastor if he’d like a copy too.

Whether you have any money to spend or not, and no matter what your ethnicity, if it bothers you at all that the Serbs have been wrongfully accused and attacked, both in the media and on the battlefield, it’s up to you to say something, for the sake of the truth if nothing else! It is only too true that Serbs have largely failed to stand up for their own interests as of late. But unless we add our voices to reinforce those Serbs who do speak up, it will only get worse.

If you are a Serb, you need to speak up. Now. Stop hiding the fact that you are a Serb (or a Serbian-American, Serbian-Canadian, Serbian-Australian, or whatever else). Resist the temptations of fear and of despair. If you are unable to speak or write English fluently, get someone to help you to express yourself. Don’t let another year, or another election cycle, go by with everyone else’s interests represented but ours.

By Zenster

I am currently enjoying the science fiction book “Clade”, by author Mark Budz (Bantam Books, 2003). This post-apocalyptic novel deals with rehabilitating the earth after an “ecocaust”, a total and catastrophic environmental collapse. In a burst of genius, Budz details population control systems that work to regulate a shattered world which is being resettled and reshuffled along ethno-cultural lines so as to reduce historic frictions.

In order to inhibit the usual cross-border conflicts, individual populations are genetically programmed to be dependent upon specific “pherion” compounds. The plot details how these pheromone-based, genetically inserted materials find their widest use in pacifying and stabilizing what would otherwise be potentially restive populations.

It is a well known scientific fact that pheromones can activate sexual arousal but many people are often unaware of their more mundane role in parent-infant bonding and other less lurid functions. Besides sex pheromones, there are also alarm pheromones and food trail pheromones along with many others that affect behavior or physiology. The insect world makes widespread use of these signaling compounds in addition to some vertebrates and plants who also communicate with them as well.

In the book, “Clade”, one specific use of these “pherions” is to lock a given population into its allocated environment. Mirroring a poisonous binary compound, antagonistic pherions must have both components present in order to prevent their attacking the body within which they reside. Creating these forced population enclaves is achieved by distributing portions of the binary (or even further segmented) pherion compound into various parts of the water supply or food chain. Due to their relatively short lifetime, these pherions must be regularly ingested so as to inhibit the antagonistic effects upon human physiology and immune systems that result if one or more of them become deficient.

A useful model for comparison is how modern bacteriologists and microbiologists used a genetically modified version of E. coli (Escherichia coli) which, unlike its more common cousin, is specifically designed to perish in an oxygen environment. This way, any laboratory containment breach that results in a release of this virulent bacterium is self-remediating as the organism cannot survive for long in the ambient natural environment.

In a similar manner, people of a given geographic population who have been made dependent upon this stabilized genetic modifier cannot up and decide to relocate elsewhere without risking immediate debilitating illness, paralysis or, even death, due to the sudden absence of one or more regulating pherion compounds. A darker side and illicit application of this same genetic chemistry lies in how it is used to enslave people. In the book, large transnational “politicorps” (political corporations) utilize this same pherion dependence model to create captive worker populations much in the same way that 19th century coal mines and other labor intensive enterprises used “company stores” to financially ensnare their workforce.

Additionally, individuals can be independently identified through analysis of their pherion profile. In the book’s plot, this serves as a separate biometric methodology to detect unauthorized immigrants, genetically tagged criminals, security risks and users of illegal counteractive measures or psychotropic compounds.

In the publishing world, this sort of “predictive writing” is called Hard Science Fiction. A better known author of this genre is David Brin (“Sundiver”, “The Practice Effect”, “The Postman”). This style is called “hard” because it does not rely upon any magic, supernatural forces or yet-to-be-invented technology. Much of what Budz describes in his book could be implemented within a fairly short amount of time, less than a decade or two at worst.

Grim as it may sound, Budz’s pherion-based technology and method of population control represents one of the few functional ways of containing this planet’s Muslim community. Those familiar with counterjihad web sites know about the great amount of speculation regarding some sort of containment model in order to restrict Islam’s encroachment upon the civilized world.

This sort of genetic implementation represents one of the only effective ways of curtailing Islamic jihad. Muslims who left their native countries or regions of origin would simply be immobilized due to progressive bodily paralysis or perish from lack of nutrient uptake, a common cold or any of innumerable other variants on immune system inhibition.

Muslims who remained in their specified areas would continue to ingest the needed pherion fragments that inhibit any antagonistic genetic reaction. Best of all, the world’s non-Muslim population would not be required to consume any of these compounds. The entire scheme would require compliance by Muslims on pain of swift death in the absence of uptake. Inoculation with these pherions would be a routine part of the expulsion process. Additionally, anyone seeking to escape after being dosed would be immediately detectable due to their pherion profile.

While this is not a one hundred percent effective containment measure, it is certainly more affordable and practical than any sort of “Berlin Wall” strategy that has been suggested by others in the past. The main intent of my bringing this concept into public awareness is to ensure that a wider audience begins to understand that there are humane and effective ways of mitigating Islamic jihad without resorting to genocide or Total War, especially nuclear annihilation.

To date, the pherion-based model is one of a very few that shows any promise in terms of forcibly re-aggregating a large Muslim population that has been deported from the West and other civilized regions. All other physical barrier models present too great of a risk with respect to being interdicted along with carrying a prohibitive operational price tag. The genetic compounds in question could be designed and originated for a few billion dollars and then grown quite economically in cultures using vat-like incubators identical to those employed by existing genetic engineering industries.

If anything, readers are encouraged to read Budz’s novel solely on its own merits. It is a well-constructed and unnerving world of possibilities that could await us if we ignore our obligation to be more diligent stewards of the environment. Indeed, subsequent to such an “ecocaust” one of the only cost-effective methods of producing bulk medicinal drugs and food stocks would be through genetic engineering.

Furthermore, this same gene-based technology would be instrumental in generating a plethora of new species capable of withstanding the intense ultra-violet light of a stripped out atmosphere along with surviving the concentrated chemical and biological contaminants that would likely result from such a catastrophe. All in all, Budz provides both excellent entertainment value and some rich food for thought with his work, “Clade”.

By Vojin Joksimovich, Ph.D.

On August 23 German Chancellor Angela Merkel visited Belgrade. The first leg of her trip was Zagreb where she met with Croatian leaders. In Belgrade she met with Serbian leaders including a one-on-one session with President Tadic. The upshot was her blunt dictate that Serbia must meet the following demands in order to qualify for consideration of EU membership: progress in the Belgrade-Pristina dialog, normalization of relations including abandonment of parallel structures in Kosovo; administrative and legal reforms, and satisfying the 1995 Copenhagen criteria. Merkel pointed out that Germany would like to see Serbia into the EU, but Germany has recognized Kosovo and Serbia has not. She recognized that resolution of the Kosovo issue is a lengthy process but it should be done now rather than later. It appears President Tadic was naively hopeful that arrests and deliveries of General Mladic and Goran Hadzic to the International Tribunal for Former Yugoslavia (ICTY) were sufficient to obtain the EU candidate status by the year end and even the date for opening the EU membership negotiations. It has been apparent for years that Serbia cannot win and that even after numerous humiliations new ones are in store. Nonetheless President Tadic and his government continue with their EU membership quest since according to them Serbia has “no alternative.”

Continuation of German Serbophobia

Chancellor Merkel has inherited German Serbophobia and has now become a loyal practitioner. Her ultimatum is abundantly clear: recognize Kosovo on EU terms and then we can talk. It is nothing new. Last August during a visit to Belgrade, the German foreign minister, Guido Westerwelle, lectured the Serbian government that the Southeast Europe map was cast in concrete and that Serbia should come to terms with its amputation. On September 12, 2010, I published an article titled Serbia Capitulates: Address was UN, not EU. As a result of his visit President Tadic yielded to the EU/US pressure to redefine the Serbian UN Kosovo resolution scheduled for a debate at the UN General Assembly. The EU was concerned that the original resolution might be voted in. As usual President Tadic capitulated. The resolution was redefined and became a joint resolution with the 27 EU countries. As such it was accepted by the UN General Assembly without a vote.

In the same article I provided a short overview of the German involvement in the Balkans. Germany went to war against Serbia three times in the previous century: WWI (1914-1918), WWII (1941-1945), and as participant in the 1999 NATO incessant 78-day bombing of Serbia. In WWI and WWII close to 2 million Serbs died. In WWII Germany created the Independent State of Croatia, in which the largest WWII genocide per unit of territory took place over the Serbs, Jews and Roma. One should also add that Germany played a pivotal part in dismemberment of Yugoslavia in 1991 with recognition of secessionist republics of Slovenia and Croatia. As a result the Serb-Croat war erupted, which was characterized as the Genscher’s war (after the German foreign minister) by Cyrus Vance, former US Secretary of State and then UN envoy, who brokered the ceasefire in January 1992. As discussed in my book Kosovo is Serbia, in 1997-1999 Germany had supported the Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA), a terrorist group initially supported by Osama bin Laden, which led their insurrection into Kosovo from Albania.

Serbs killed in WW1 in Krusevac

Every ethnicity in Yugoslavia had a right of self-determination other than the Serbs. The Versailles Treaty which ended the WWI was a thorn in the eye not only to Adolf Hitler but also to the reunified Germany. Hans Dietrich Genscher in his memoirs wrote that by the end of the wars in Former Yugoslavia, the Germans have repaired the deeds or consequences of WWI: the foundation of Yugoslavia and the end of the Austro-Hungarian monarchy. The US Balkan policies, including siding with the Bosnian Muslims and Kosovo Albanians, have helped Germany repair the consequences of WWII. The amputation of Kosovo from Serbia is probably not the end of dismemberment of Serbia. Vojvodina and Sandzak are also candidates until Serbia is reduced to either its 1878 Berlin Congress size or the Hitler’s 1941 version. Abolishment of Republika Srpska in Bosnia is probably on the cards in order to satisfy the ambitions of the Bosnian Muslims who also want inclusion of Sandzak into their Islamic Republic.

Chancellor Merkel is obviously continuing with these Serbophobic policies of Germany as a Balkans predator. Given that she wasn’t the chancellor at the time, I had some illusions that she might show some compassion for the destiny of the Kosovo Serbs, who have been victimized by US/NATO Kosovo policies. Abandonment of so called parallel structures would in all likelihood lead to yet another ethnic cleansing of the remaining Serbs in Kosovo after the ethnic cleansing in Croatia (1995), Bosnia (1995) and Kosovo (1999) respectively.

While in Zagreb, Chancellor Merkel has provided a boost to Croatia’s ambition to be the leader of so called Western Balkans. Germany pushed the EU to grant Croatia EU membership as of July 1, 2013. In no time the Croatian PM Kosor went to Pristina to tell Kosovo PM Hashim Thaci: “You can have in Croatia the best friend in southeast Europe and you can count on that.” She also said that Croatia “fully supports the approach of Chancellor Merkel towards Serbia by saying it has to extinguish its parallel structures in Kosovo and cannot acquire EU candidate status before solving its problems with Kosovo.”

Kosovo Serbs: Victims on UN/NATO Watch

On UN/NATO watch, with significant participation of the German KFOR contingent, 2,500 Serbs and Roma were murdered, while 230,000 were ethnically cleansed. Iseult Henry, Mary Walsh in real life, an Irish lady who was a member of the international mission in Kosovo, wrote a book Hiding Genocide in Kosovo: A Crime against God and Humanity. She provided an account of twelve true stories illustrating shooting, beheading, burning, bomb attack, maiming, rape, abduction, torture, desecration, theft, mutilation, and harassment. The book is an indictment of her fellow internationals that saw what was happening and have looked the other way or even abetted ethnic cleansing. She characterized Kosovo as prison without walls.

On March 17, 2004, there was a pogrom named by some as the Kosovo Kristallnacht. A 60,000 strong Albanian mob drove 4,500 Serbs from their homes, 550 houses were burned, and 35 Serbian churches and monasteries demolished. The toll in Prizren included nine damaged or destroyed Serbian churches encompassing four medieval shrines. The German troops, more than 3,000 in Kosovo, evacuated the monks but abandoned the entire compound. The German Der Spiegel reported: “The Bundeswehr played a sad, perhaps even very shameful role in restraining the violence. The German soldiers, hiding like rabbits in their barracks, emerged again with armored vehicles only once the Albanian crowd had calmed down and having completed its work of destruction. Human Rights Watch condemned KFOR/UNMIK for “failing catastrophically in their mandate.”

In my August 2 article titled Kosovo Serbs Defend Their Existence, Christianity & UN Resolution, I described the July 25 incident. Hashim Thaci, accused by the Council of Europe of running a “mafia state” and alleged to have committed unspeakable atrocities including organ harvesting, who masquerades as the Kosovo PM, sent his special police units to seize two crossing posts on the administrative line between the Republic of Serbia and Kosovo. His objective was to ban trade with Serbia, seeking to pressure the Kosovo Serbs into recognizing his custom stamps. His units were transported by KFOR commanded by Erhard Buhler, a German general. It is outside the scope of this article to further discuss this incident. However, it should be said that a retired American diplomat, Gerald Gallucci who repeatedly warned against the military takeover of Northern Kosovo, wrote: “KFOR under the command of German General Buhler has clearly stepped outside its UN Security Council mandate in deciding to enforce the requirements of the institutions in Pristina. Buhler should be removed.” Not only that Buhler was not removed but it was discovered that his Albanian girlfriend of three years was born in Pristina. He met her in Kosovo in 2001.

The UN Security Council has scheduled a session to discuss the crisis in Northern Kosovo. Mayors of the Serbian cities of Leposavic, Kosovska Mitrovica, Zubin Potok and Zvecan representing 80,000 inhabitants have submitted their letter to the UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon explaining their position. This time around the Serbian foreign minister Vuk Jeremic will be allowed to represent his country. Nine out of 15 Security Council members have not recognized Kosovo.

Chancellor Merkel’s Audacity

Despite all of the above, which is nothing more than a snapshot of atrocities and injustices committed by so called international community, Madam Merkel had audacity to come to Belgrade and tell the Serbian leadership that the parallel institutions in Northern Kosovo should be dismantled. This means de facto that the Kosovo Serbs should be subjugated to Hashim Thaci and his fellow narco-terrorists, who have committed genocide and ethnic cleansing over them. It appears that Chancellor Merkel is shameless. Former Russian president and now PM Vladimir Putin, in response to a Kosovo question from a German journalist he said it best: “Europe, you should be ashamed, Kosovo is Serbia.”

To his credit, President Tadic told Chancellor Merkel that it was unacceptable to Serbia to abandon its Kosovo citizens. It would result in a political and existential vacuum. On the other hand he stated that Serbia will not abandon its quest to join the EU. If by that he meant that Serbia would only freeze its efforts until the future EU leadership develops a human face, this writer would go along. Of course freezing the accession efforts doesn’t mean abandoning various EU dictated reforms, which are in Serbia’s interest anyway nor does it mean that Serbia should not be trading with various EU countries, such as Italy or even Germany, as it does now. Meanwhile President Tadic might learn something from the Czech President Vaclav Klaus as well as from the Turkish EU membership accession experience. He should also take time to understand that there are viable alternatives.

Czech President: EU “Foreign Empire”

In response to a question at the European Forum held in Alpbach Austria, about whether he regretted the fact that his country had joined the EU, Czech president Vaclav Klaus said that he considered the EU a foreign power and compared it to several empires that oppressed his country for centuries. “First Vienna ruled over us for three centuries, and then Berlin did it for a few years. Then the four decades of Moscow followed, and then ten years of freedom. Now we have Brussels…After the Velvet Resolution of 1989, here were graffiti on the walls reading, ‘Back to Europe,’ and in that situation, it went without saying that we belonged to Europe. That was before Maastricht, that was the time of the European Community.” Klaus went on to say that the Europeans should cooperate and live together, but that should be taking place through bilateral cooperation between governments, rather than through “supernationalism.”

Turkey’s EU Accession

Turkey first applied for associate membership in the European Economic Community (EEC) in 1959. In 1963 it signed an association agreement, known as the Ankara Agreement. In 1987, Turkey submitted its application for formal membership in the EEC. In 1989, the European Commission (EC) confirmed eventual membership but deferred the matter to “more favorable times.” This position was confirmed in 1997. The next step was the December 2002 Copenhagen European Council. According to it, the EU would open negotiations “without delay” in 2004. The EC recommended that the negotiations should begin in 2005. Turkey’s accession has been stalled since. The earliest date that Turkey could enter EU is now 2013 (EU’s six-year budget comes into force), but Brussels has refused to back the 2013 deadline. The EC president Barroso said that the accession process will take at least until 2021.

Needless to say, Turkey has all but lost interest in the EU and has looked to their rich Islamic Persian Gulf brothers for investments. With the help from them plus a number of successful regional initiatives, Turkey has developed its economy and currently enjoys economic prosperity.

Serbian Alternatives

Like the Czech Republic, Serbia in its history was oppressed by several empires: Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian, Nazi Germany, Communist, and US/NATO. It doesn’t need to be oppressed by the current German dominated EU empire.

The Tadic administration has been driven by EU pre-membership donations amounting to 2.68 billion Euros between 2000 and 2011, which are 1,600 times greater than donations from Russia and China. However, Russia and China didn’t bomb Serbia nor did they amputate the country. Germany and most other EU countries – NATO members had caused an economic damage in excess of 100 billion Euros plus numerous human sufferings. The 1999 aggression plus the 1992 UN sanctions have contributed to the present economic misery in Serbia: GDP 75% of that in 1990, industrial production 43% of that in 1990, over 20% unemployed, 700,000 living below the poverty line, etc. Besides, the accession process may last until 2021 suggesting that further donations would be much reduced as the EU budgets will shrink in all likelihood.

On a number of occasions I have advocated that Serbia should attempt to establish an association with the BRICs (Brazil, Russia, India, and China). In the decade that ended in 2010, the BRICs added $8 trillion to global GDP. The BRICs will probably add $12 trillion over the coming decade, double the US and eurozone combined. South Africa has joined the BRICs.

Another alternative for Serbia is to join the Russian-led Customs Union (Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia) which became fully operational on July 1. Yet another is to wait for a likely breakup of the eurozone predicted by many distinguished economists including Alan Greenspan, former US Federal Reserve chief. Martin Sandbu, in the Financial Times article Europe need not wait for Germany, has advocated that the solution of the eurozone fiscal crisis is to leave Berlin behind. Eleven eurozone countries can create a 3.5 trillion eurobond market on their own. Currently Chancellor Merkel considers eurobonds as the very last resort. There is no question that Germany benefitted most from the eurozone but now doesn’t want to be a part of a “transfer union” to profligate countries like Greece. The idea that Serbia could become a member of this new European entity is of course far-fetched but anything can happen before 2021.

Letter to the Editor
Globe & Mail

Dear Editor:

The remark made in your paper that “Jasenovac never happened” is both irresponsible and outrageously inaccurate. It smacks of the worse kind of yellow journalism.

I have written 7 books on Balkan history and culture including Jasenovac Then & Now: A Conspiracy of Silence (1997) in which I documented a great number of authorities including major German sources. This letter will obviously not be published, even if I managed to give you 150 words as your anti-Serb bias is well known. However, this writer can provide hundreds of testimonies. Pretending that Genocide of the Serbs twice in my family within my lifetime is a figment of my imagination is truly insulting.

In 1941 Croat Nazis and the Nazi priests locked 97 Serbs inside the Serbian church in Vojnic and burned it to the ground. Seventeen of those victims were my relatives. Fast forward to 1995 during Operation Storm, the last 5 relatives of my name were too old and too sick to flee. I was notified by the Red Cross a month later they were found with their throats slit. My first book, Serbian Genocide 1941-45 was co written with the late Michael Lees, author of The Rape of Serbia (1989) and the late David Martin, author of The Web of Disinformation (1989) and it was based on this double genocide of my family and hundreds of thousands of Krajina Serbs during WWII. Now some jerk at Globe & Mail tells the world this did not happen? What moronic journalism!

Apparently your newspaper has amnesia? When the war ended in 1945… 460 Roman Catholic priests (I can name them) fled for Argentina through the “Vatican Ratline,” including such creatures as Klaus Barbie and Croat President Ante Pavelich who became the security advisor to Juan Peron who issued 34,000 visas to Croatian war criminals, all of whom escaped justice. I suppose none of this provable history is real today with the Catholic influence over your pages?

Jasenovac not only happened, but for a newspaper of your stature to attempt to rewrite history shows a hideous lack of integrity and honesty. Jasenovac was a Croatian Concentration Camp where Croat Nazis put to death 700,000 Serbs, 40,000 Jews and 60,000 Roma, including 100,000 Serbian children under the age of ten years who were poisoned to death by Roman Catholic nuns using toxic soda. You staff needs to read the books of the late Michael Lees and David Martin.

Your writer is either unskilled, poor at research, bias, intolerant, a racist or is totally ignorant. I challenge this ugly policy of historical revisionism by your newspaper. and I demand an apology and a retraction.

Below my signature are a few quotes from my book Jasenovac Then & Now: A Conspiracy of Silence. Perhaps if your editorial staff took the time to stop demonizing the Serbs long enough to read some important books on Balkan history they would not come off looking like editorial morons? Or is this about a Croatian and Muslim agenda for which you work so diligently? It certainly is not about honesty, integrity or historical accuracy. Little wonder why our children are illiterate when it comes to world history. It is jerks like those on your staff that get away with spoon feeding them pure crap supported by an equally dishonest editor!

Knowing this letter will reach the round file faster then your editorial staff can read it I will post this on numerous Serbian websites so that the rest of the world will get a hard look at the depth to which a newspaper will stoop. After reading the following quotes do I expect your apology or a retraction … no, I am not that naïve.

“There is not a pen capable of describing the horror and terror of the atmosphere at Jasenovac. It surpasses any human fantasy. Imagine Hell, the Inquisition, a terror more dreadful than any that ever before existed anywhere, run by bloodthirsty wild animals whose most hidden and disgusting instincts had come to the surface in a way never before seen in human beings—and still you have not said enough.”

— Antun Miletich (Croatian survivor of Jasenovac Concentration Camp), Belgrade, 1986, p. 7.

•••••

“… The exact number of victims swallowed by the camp of Jasenovac will never be established, because of the stated reasons, but that on the basis of investigation led by the Commission, it can be concluded that the number of around 500,000 to 600,000 conforms to reality.”

— “Crimes in the Jasenovac Camp,” The Croatian Commission, November 15, 1945.

•••••

“For centuries the Serbian people have stood in the Balkans as the bulwark of Christian civilization against invaders and oppressors. As a consequences of their stand, great losses have been inflicted on them in the course of centuries… Genocide in its worst and most destructive form, however, was inflicted upon the Serbs in 1941-45 by the members of the Croatian Fascist movement, the Ustasha… The massacres carried out in the Serbian Orthodox Church in Glina between May and August, 1941, belong undoubtedly, to the darkest chapters of human depravity in modern times.”

— Senator Herbert H. Lehman, New York, U.S. Senate, October 20, 1951.

•••••

“As soon as they had come to power, the Ustashi began a racial campaign for the sake of the Croatian race—as they put it—for the sake of the Catholic religion, in order to create a perfectly homogeneous community for the new state … They began destroying on a wide scale the Serbian Orthodox population … and Jews for reasons well known. That campaign was characterized by the killing of tens of thousands of people, including old people, women, and children, while thousands more were locked up in so-called internment camps established on the devastated land without any form of shelter, left there to die of hunger and hardships.

In many respects, the Independent State of Croatia tried to copy and follow the example of Nazi Germany, but on the level of genocide, the Independent State of Croatia has surpassed her.”

— Mario Roatta, Army General Commander of the Italian occupation troops in Yugoslavia, Verona, 1946.

•••••

“The Serbs have become slaughterhouse material. In accordance with this doctrine, the Ustashi took actions against the Serbs, people of the highest cultural level in the Balkans but not of the Catholic faith. Catholics were urged from the church pulpits to persecute Orthodox Serbs. Especially arduous in this were the Franciscans, whose monasteries have for a long time served as a meeting grounds for the Ustashi. Furthermore, it is understood that from a population total of three million Orthodox…more than 600,000 people were killed.”

— Karlheinz Deschner, German writer of With God and the Fascists, Stuttgart, 1965.

•••••

“What the Serbian children came to experience in the Croatian concentration camps represents in the history of mankind an isolated example of human suffering. Bartholomew’s night in comparison with the Croatian hell was a picnic. The Croats showed the darkest side toward the Serbian children. They impaled them on bayonets, burned them alive in the crematoriums, boiled them in cauldrons for making soap, threw them alive into deep wells and pits, poisoned them with caustic soda, starved them to death.

— Dr. Nikola Nikolich, Croatian Doctor of Medicine, Jasenovac inmate and survivor

•••••

“When the civilized world finds out about it, revulsion and indignation will be such that I do not know what will happen to us Croats. Just one detail: In the streets of Croatian cities the gouged-out eyes of Serbs are collected and offered for sale—30-40 eyes at a time.”

— Nikola Pavelic, Croatian Diplomat, on his arrival from Croatia to Rio de Janeiro, May 15, 1942.

•••••

“Indiscriminate national and ecclesiastical-Catholic egocentrism, which blended into each other in the popular Croat national ideology, projected a picture of a newly resurrected ‘Holy Croatia,’ which was charged with spreading the glory of God and the Catholic Croat nation by sword and conversion. The slogan ‘God and Croats,’ which originated with Ante Starcevic, was resurrected and altered: ‘Christ and the Ustashi,’ … ‘Ustashi Croatia will belong only to Christ and to us and to no one else…”

— Published in German: The Croatian Ustashi State, 1941-45, by Laszlo Hory (a Hungarian) and Martin Borszat (a German).

•••••

“These are the means by which The Independent State of Croatia was established. The Byzantine-Orthodox pressure on Croatia has been suppressed so that now Croatia may take upon itself the role of the bastion of Europe. The Independent State of Croatia is the only state on the Balkan peninsula with a Catholic majority. The only bastion of Catholicism in the Balkans. But not only that, The Independent State of Croatia today is the strongest pillar in Central Europe. The Croatian people were never and never will be for Pan-Slavism….The Independent State of Croatia was created by those state-building elements of the Croatian body, which found in the Ustasha movement their organizational form. Croatian Catholicism is greatly indebted and must express its gratitude to the Ustasha movement. It is a fact that this authority, through its work and principles, never sinned against Catholic principles. Its revolutionary work is in harmony with Catholic ethics.”

— Dr. Ivo Guberina, An Ustasha Priest, Published in the journal Croatian Review, #7-10, 1943.

In British elections we’re used to what we call “battle buses”, cheerfully painted wagons, festooned with party slogans and colours.

US President Barack Obama has embarked on his first bus tour in office.

But his vehicle for the trip through the rural parts of three Midwestern states looks like it really is heading for a battle.

Big, blocky, black, with painted-out windows, it looks more like a police mortuary van than a symbol of hope arriving on your street.
Neither inspirational nor angry enough, he needs something fresher – and to find another mode of transport than the battle bus from Mordor.

“A painful but necessary book to read. It is the most important contribution ever to the Norwegian immigration and integration debate….It should be obligatory reading for everyone who works with foreigners in Norway.”
Tore Andreas Larsen, FREMSKRITT

“If Hege Storhaug’s revelations about how our country and other Western societies are being attacked by Islamic fundamentalists…are not taken seriously by the powerful politicians, we will, within a few years, see a different, illiberal European in which a mentality out of the Middle Ages will wield absolute power…..One of the most important opinion books that have come along in recent years.”

Bloody Truth

Nicosia, March 2009. ISBN 9789963962204

The apparently endless stalemate on Cyprus is getting a thorough treatment in the publication by the organization “Freedom and Justice for Cyprus”. While the documentation of what went down through the 1960’s and 1970’s is shocking and brutal, the real coup of the book is that it goes back to the 1950’s, once and for all settling the question of who originally created the conflict in Cyprus: It wasn’t the ‘Turkish’ Cypriots. Nor was it Turkey. It was, documentably, Great Britain.

The book has a cover as brutal as the title, an image of Cyprus with blood dripping from the north into the southern part. Based on this, one might expect it to contain a vitriolic anti-Turkish diatribe, but this isn’t really the case. In spite of some linguistic excesses, such as the phrase “The Turkish Propaganda Machine”, the book in general sticks to the documentation of events and developments on the ground, and thus becomes a valuable resource for understanding the current stalemate, as well as for assessing the merits of various proposed solutions.

As for who sowed the seeds of the current problems, the book is clear: It was not Turkey, nor Turkish Cypriots, it was Great Britain. Seeking a way to maintain the colonial rule established in 1923, Britain feared a united Cypriot opposition to their rule, and gradually worked to strengthen the Muslim/Turkish identity of the Muslim Cypriots. That included construction of new mosques in villages without any, initiating the use of the term “Turkish Cypriots”, and later requesting Turkey to reclaim rule of the island, an idea initially received with disinterest by the Turkish government.

However, a committee on the subject was formed in July 1955, and in 1956, professor Nihat Erim was appointed special advisory on the Cyprus issue. In November and December 1956, he released two reports endorsing an active Turkish engagement in Cyprus, aiming first at a division of the island into Greek and Turkish parts (termed “Taksin”), and to work long-term for a full Turkish takeover. This policy was adopted by the Turkish government, and has been followed by various Turkish governments — civilian or military — since then.

The book details chronology of various Greek and Turkish groups formed in the late 1950’s, including EOKA (Greek), VOLCAN (Turkish) and TMT (Turkish). Their chronology is particular important, for it is useful in weeding out honest statements from deceitful ones. This includes Turkish statements about the “Bloodthirsty Makarios”, the work by Rauf Denktash to turn TMT into an underground Turkish organization, the killing of Turkish voices other than those of TMT, and the efforts to make Turkish Cypriots segregate themselves from the Greek Cypriots. The tacit approval of the British in this marks a low point of harmful colonial divide-and-rule strategies.

Descriptions of events after 1962 are somewhat more sketchy. The proposed constitutional changes in 1963 play a central role, and the efforts by the TMT to segregate the Greek and Turkish are recorded in a very varied degree of detail. The Turkish bombardment of Tylleria in August 1964 is mentioned, but the heavy fighting in the preceding months are not. Advance references to the 2004 Annan Plan and similar chronological leaps are annoying, in spite of their relevance. The 1974 invasion is likewise accounted for in an unsystematic way, jumping rapidly from overall descriptions to individual tales of mass rapes and executions by the Turkish soldiers.

The real strength of this book is the wealth of original sources — British, Cypriot, Turkish — drawn in and quoted here. Many common fallacies and outright lies are dismantled, and for this reason it is easy to forgive the somewhat uneven narrative of the book. Harder to forgive is the lack of illustrations. Some maps providing an overview of violent incidents and the 1974 invasion would be welcome, as would some tables with statistics.

This book provides essential background information for the situation in Cyprus. It has its strength in quoting vital original documents in their proper context, showing a clear route from British colonial machinations to direct Turkish involvement, and provides an indispensable understanding of many key events. On the other hand, it is jumpy, both chronologically and emotionally, clearly one-sided, and skips chunks of history needed for a full account of the developments.

Review opinion: 4/6

If you have interest in the Cyprus conflict, adding this book to your collection is recommended, in particular because it provides crucial information regarding the role played by the British.

For those interested, more details out of “Bloody Truth”, and some closing comments:

In 1878, Cyprus was ceded from Ottoman to British rule, initially as a long-term lease agreement. The Cypriots, having been ruled by the Ottomans since 1571, welcomed the change, rejoicing in a European power coming back to Cyprus, setting the hopes for eventually establishing a modern, independent Cypriot state, much as countries in the Balkans during the 19th century had cast off centuries of brutal Ottoman rule and restored their independence.

Independence and self-determination were not in the cards for Cyprus, however. Even after World War I, when the Wilsonian Principles of self-determination of the peoples led to dismantling of empires and the re-establishment of multiple nation-states, Cyprus was not one of the states to return to independence. Rather, it became a British crown colony in 1925, after Turkey in the Treaty of Lausanne had relinquished all interests in the island.

Maintaining colonial rule was growing increasingly difficult, however, and not least in a country that considered itself part of the Western civilization, the Greek in particular. Great Britain set out to do what it had done so successfully elsewhere, to divide and rule. Strengthening the Islamic identity of the Muslims in Cyprus was deemed essential to this, and to do so, Britain initiated construction of mosques in many villages that had never had one.

Opening the door for Turkey

Then [BT: Page 208], on June 8th 1949 came a note in the minority newspaper “Halkni Sesi”: It reported that the British Governor R. E. Turnbull requested the term “Muslims of Cyprus” to be replaced with the currently used “Turkish Cypriots”. This seemingly insignificant change of terms in time brought about a change in perception, that the Muslims in Cyprus were Turks, and thus that Turkish interference on the island represented a legitimate concern for Turkish citizens.

But that was hard work. As Turkish foreign minister Ali Kuprulu said in 1950:

“For Turkey, there does not exist any Cyprus issue”.

Only in 1954, when Archbishop Makarios with the aid of Greece got Cyprus on the agenda of the United Nations, did help from the British press become sufficient that a Turkish demand to gain control of Cyprus could be raised at the United Nations. This is related in chilling detail on pages 208 through 213, and since the long-term consequences of these machinations are well known, it stands as a sinister example of how to cause severe long-term damage in international relations.

Taking the opportunity

For Turkey was not late in spotting an opportunity to increase regional influence and gain an advance strategic stronghold south of Turkey proper. In 1956, Turkish Prime minister Menderes set out to investigate the potential of getting a foothold in Cyprus. Professor Nihat Erim endorsed the idea, which has remained official Turkish policy since. The aim was to first provoke an ethnic division (Taksin) of Cyprus, then in the long term aim to take over the island entirely.

Turkey didn’t miss the opportunity offered to them by the British, having no particular interest in upholding international law in the process.

Taking up arms

On pages 214 through 231, we get quite a bit of detail about the increasing use (and misuse) of weapons and violence, in particular the formation of the Turkish orgs VOLKAN and TMT. Simultaneously, the armed movement EOKA was formed to dislodge the British colonial rule and replace it with a free and democratic Cypriot state. The story of this struggle is related elsewhere, but it clearly strengthened the British resolve to invite Turkish involvement in Cyprus, for it is much easier to rule over a divided people than a unified one. Thus Britain made Turkey partner in all formal proceedings, and turned a blind eye to Turkey’s creating a paramilitary organization TMT, 10,000 members strong, discreetly armed from Turkey and led by retired Turkish military staff.

Violent acts also took place elsewhere. On September 6th 1955, a minor bomb went off at the house where Kemal Atatürk was born, and on that pretext, along with pressure from the Turkish group “Cyprus is Turkish”, the Greek quarter of Istanbul (previously Constantinople) was severely damaged and looted, leading eventually to further ethnic cleansing of the Greek minority there.

The underground army TMT were to play a pivotal role in the following years. The predecessor, VOLKAN, had been partly British directed, but under the excellent leadership of Rauf Denktash, things slipped out of British control to the radical Turkish-supported circle around TMT. With this group systematically killing off Turkish-Cypriot dissent from their radical agenda, including labor union leaders, journalists and others of the opinion that peaceful coexistence between all Cypriots was a preferable option. Thus, TMT and Rauf Denktash managed to establish themselves as the only major voice of the Muslim / Turkish Cypriots. Not exactly democratic, but effective.

Winding up

After the semi-independence of 1960, the book becomes more spotty and could well have covered the events much more systematically. It does, however, bring out a valuable series of mythbusting, including the so-called “Bathtub murders” in 1963, the bombing of the Bayraktar mosque in Nicosia, the burning of a mosque in 1974, and other incidents staged to escalate Greek-Turkish animosity in ways similar to bombing the birthplace of Kemal Atatürk, then blaming the Greeks.

The pattern of Turks staging a (minor) event, or exploiting an unrelated crime for propaganda purposes, has been revealed bit by bit many years after they had the desired effect on the ground. Here, for instance, is a report from Today’s Zaman touching on several key events staged by Turkish parts in the conflict.

It is an unfortunate fact that whipping up emotion and confusing the minds of decision-makers can lead to a lot of mistakes in the heat of the moment, leading to the creation of more problems than the existed before, and in particular to situations on the ground that are difficult and/or embarrassing to solve correctly. This has been the case in Cyprus for decades on end.

However, bringing to light the details of past manipulations and mistakes is helpful in the long run, and Bloody Truth, in spites of its flaws, does a good job at delivering facts and details that really should have been out decades ago. It might have been a better book if it had put down a full stop at, say, 1964, leaving coverage of the 1974 Turkish invasion, the 1983 TRNC declaration and the 2004 Annan Plan for future books. But it is plenty readable and useful as it is, and has as its particular strength the extensive use of primary sources.

The path forward

No article about the conflict in Cyprus without outlining some principles about how to proceed, even though it is not directly the subject of Bloody Truth. The developments since the 1950’s has been marked by a never-ending failure to uphold international law, though usually under the pretence of doing so. “Never let a good crisis go to waste” has been applied repeatedly, all to frequently to crises created by deliberate manipulations. The Annan Plan marks a low point in that development, for as Alfred de Zayas wrote about it:

One year after the vote [the 2004 referendum], upon a calmer rereading of the Annan plan, the non-committed observer may wonder whether anyone could have reasonably expected the Cypriot population in non-occupied Cyprus to vote in favour of a plan that entailed abandoning positions held by the Security Council and the General Assembly since July 1974, and which seriously undermined fundamental principles of international law contained in numerous universal and regional documents.

On the state of international law in the context of Cyprus and Turkish aggression:

Can such grave violations of international law be retroactively legalized ? International law experts hold the view that such violations cannot be legalized. Alas, the situation of violation of international law norms by States — in total impunity — is not rare. However, this does not mean that international law has ceased to exist or that these particular norms have ceased to be applicable.

Further:

This Annan Plan is all the more distressing, because it manifests the application of double-standards at the highest level of the United Nations. Ethnic cleansing was condemned at Nuremberg. It is condemned today at The Hague by the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia. And yet Turkey is allowed to occupy militarily one third of the territory of another European country and to keep the fruits of the crime. Why this double-standard?

In order to uphold international law and the underlying principles of national sovereignty, a solution for Cyprus should be decided upon only by proper citizens of Cyprus — not Turkish soldiers or illegal settlers — and should adhere to principles laid down in international law, such as:

1.

Implementation of all relevant judgments and resolutions of international courts.

2.

Withdrawal of foreign military forces from Northern Cyprus;

3.

Withdrawal of illegal settlers in Northern Cyprus, in line with article 49 of the 4th Geneva Convention;

4.

Recognition of the right of return of all displaced Cypriots; and

5.

Restitution or compensation to displaced Cypriots for confiscated or destroyed properties.

This is no easy task, for much confidence has been placed in the United Nations, which has not lived up to it. But the underlying principles of international law are not that hard to understand, including not rewarding aggression or letting aggressors keep the fruits of their aggression, as well as the obvious principle of respecting private property. The latter has been made easier by recent court verdicts upholding the property rights of Cypriots who for over 30 years have been kept from using their rightful property by the Turkish occupation forces.
Cyprus has become a test case for honest upholding of international law. So far, it has resulted in many more failures than successes, which is eroding Cypriot confidence in international negotiations and deals to solve their problem. The reality on the ground is what matters to most. This includes the fact that passage to the occupied territory is now legal and easy, that the property rights of Cypriots is being upheld, and that even Turkish Cypriots are protesting the Turkish presence on their island. The hardest issue is the fate of the 200,000+ illegal Turkish settlers in the northern part of Cyprus. That, however, is a problem that the state of Turkey must resolve. For Cyprus belongs to the Cypriots, not to British, Turkey or illegally imported Turkish settlers.

From activist Naomi Ragen:

Friends,

I have been anxiously following the travails of courageous author Rachel Ehrenfeld, who dared to expose the Saudi connection to terrorist funding, and has since been hit with one frivolous and ridiculous lawsuit after another. From personal experience, I can tell you that this is the way that fanatics and the enemies of free speech wear down and intimidate authors with the guts to tell the truth. They wear them down financially, because lawyers are expensive and you have to use a lawyer even if you are completely innocent and the other side are self-serving, immoral liars and/or idiots with absolutely no case. They wear you down emotionally, because you have to face court dates, and public scrutiny, and the fear of some clueless judge (like the one in Britain Rachel faced) finding you guilty and imposing multi-million dollar fines against you.

Now, the capital of freedom and of publishing, New York, is about to pass legislation that will stop the success of the kind of lawsuits facing the Rachel Ehrenfelds of the world, protecting them from the insanities of foreign justice. You can help to see this law passed. Below, details. Please, please get involved. Brigitte Gabriel, another author I admire, has written the letter below. Please write the assemblymen involved, Please write influential editors of influential papers. Help us to see this happen!!

From Brigitte Gabriel, ACT For America:

Libel Terrorism Protection Act

We are concerned with the bi-partisan “Libel Terrorism Protection Act,” introduced in the New York Assembly and Senate by Assemblyman Rory Lancman (D) and Senator Dean Skelos (R).This bill has been introduced to protect New York authors who investigate and expose the enablers of terrorism from libel lawsuits filed in foreign courts.

Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld, author of Funding Evil: How Terrorism is Financed – And How to Stop It, was the target of one of those lawsuits. The wealthy Saudi who filed the lawsuit against Dr. Ehrenfeld in the United Kingdom has successfully silenced more than 40 authors and publishers, including many Americans. If these lawsuits are allowed to continue, the ramifications for our cherished freedoms of speech and the press are chilling and ominous. The sooner “The Libel Terrorism Protection Act,” is signed into law, the sooner New York – the publishing capital of the U.S. and the free world – and New York authors will be protected from meritless and frivolous libel suits filed in foreign jurisdictions.

The “Libel Terrorism Protection Act” directly affects me (Brigitte). My first book, Because They Hate, was published by a New York publisher. My second book, scheduled for release later this year, will be published by that same New York publisher. Passage of this New York law will bring much-needed legal protection to the work I am doing. If you agree that this protection is essential to preserve the ability of authors like myself to speak out on matters of terrorism, please carefully read the action items below and then ACT! today. Thank you!

Litigation Jihad and Canada’s “Human Rights Commission”

Mark Steyn is yet another member of the anti-jihadist community who is under siege by the enforcers of political correctness. Merely for having written the truth about unchecked Islamic expansionism in western societies, Steyn is being prosecuted by Canada’s misnamed “Human Rights Commission” (HRC), at the federal level.

Recently, fellow Canadian writer Ezra Levant has also been interrogated by the provincial HRC in Alberta for having published the Mohammed cartoons.

(Originally posted on The Terror Finance Blog
by Rachel Ehrenfeld on January 21, 2008 at 17:42)

NY State Assemblyman Rory Lancman gets it. Concerned with the growing threat of the Islamist Financial Jihad on our freedoms, Lancman authored the Libel Terrorism Protection Act in New York with Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean Skelos.

They announced the new legislation on the stairs of the NY Public Library last week.

Click here to view the embedded video.

Lancman explained in Human Events:

When we think about those fighting the war on terror, we of course first think of our soldiers in Afghanistan and Iraq. They are on the front lines, risking their lives to protect our country. We also think about our local cops and firefighters and first responders. They are defending our cities, unearthing terrorist plots and rushing to the scene of attacks to save and rescue lives.

But every American has an obligation to do their part, in whatever way they can, to contribute to victory over Islamic fundamentalism. So while soldiers fight, cops protect, and even individual citizens who “see something” make sure to “say something,” our journalists and authors discover and publish the truth about terrorists and their enablers the financiers, frontmen and terrorism-friendly regimes who provide the financial, logistical and political support and cover which enable the terrorists to exist, operate and strike.

The 19 men who boarded airplanes on September 11, 2001 and flew them into the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and a Pennsylvania field were merely the tip of a long and elaborate sword aimed at the West, a worldwide network of moneymen, coordinators, facilitators, propagandists and apologists who compose the terrorist network which delivered those 19 men to American airports.

The ability of our journalists, authors and press to expose these enablers and inform the American people, to discover and report the truth, is the most important weapon we have in the war on terror. The information they unearth informs not just the general public, but policymakers who must make choices about strategies and tactics, resources and priorities, allies and adversaries, in how best to fight this war. Without their work, we are all merely groping around in the dark.

The terrorists and their enablers know this.

That’€™s why American journalists and authors who relentlessly and doggedly pursue the truth about terrorism networks are being met with a barrage of libel lawsuits in kangaroo courts on phony-baloney libel charges in overseas jurisdictions who don’t share our belief in freedom of speech or a free press.

England seems to be the enablers’€˜ favorite forum, perhaps because since it is a Western country we might expect it to have libel laws which reflect what we Americans assume to be common Western values about freedom of speech, and to give an English libel judgment the same stamp of approval we would give an American one. In fact, America’s commitment to free speech and a free press is unique in the world. English libel law has barely evolved over the centuries. Authors are guilty until proven innocent, lack of negligence on the part of the author is irrelevant, statements of opinion are hardly more protected than statements of fact, an author=s unsuccessful effort to prove the truth of a statement can bring punitive damages and libel is even punishable as a misdemeanor crime.

New York author Dr. Rachel Ehrenfeld, who has written extensively on terrorist financing, has experienced libel terrorism firsthand. Twenty-three copies of her book, Funding Evil: How Terrorism is Financed and How to Stop It, were sold in England over the internet. Additionally, a chapter of her book was available for viewing on the website of an American television network. On that basis, she was sued for libel in England by a Saudi businessman whom she identified in her book as a terrorist enabler through his financial support of organizations with terrorist ties.

What’s shocking is not that an English court found against Dr. Ehrenfeld (not only was the deck stacked against her in any event but Dr. Ehrenfeld, as a matter of principle and financial inability to defend herself overseas, declined to show up for her show trial), but that New York’s courts have refused to recognize its jurisdiction over the Saudi businessman in order to hear Dr. Ehrenfeld’s suit to declare this libel judgment unenforceable in New York. Dr. Ehrenfeld lives and works in New York, her assets are in New York, and the English judgment requires her to take actions in New York to prevent her book and its assertions from ever reaching England again.

As Americans and as New Yorkers, we must to act to protect our journalists, authors and press.

Legislation which I have authored in New York with Senate Deputy Majority Leader Dean Skelos will overrule New York’s highest court and give Dr. Ehrenfeld the opportunity to make her case here in the United States. It will give New Yorks journalists, authors and press the tools they need to continue to fearlessly expose the truth about terrorism and its enablers, and will ensure that New York, and America, remain a beacon of free speech and a free press. Other states will, we hope, follow New York’€™s lead, and Congress itself will act to protect the entire country from the scourge of libel terrorism.

Mr. Lancman is a New York State Assemblyman, a Democrat in the Twenty-Fifth District, Queens.

Smith, author of The Official Handbook of the Vast Right-Wing Conspiracy, has updated the handbook for the 2008 Presidential elections: The Arguments You Need to Defeat the Loony Left This Election Year

My favorite part of the book is a tongue-in-cheek flowchart in the preface, called “The Smoking Gun,” detailing the “conspiracy.”

The rest of the book, however, is an excellent compilation of this election year’s talking points. It’s a great quick-reference for bloggers and social networkers who find themselves in combat with leftist rhetoric on a daily basis. It covers all of the hot topics in the debates and news soundbytes, like immigration, the war, governmental power, socialism, abortion, and media bias. It also has a toolkit at the end for conservative voters, which gives a who’s who of the current giants in the conservative movement, and lists resources such as think-tanks print media, blogs, and right-leaning news teams, a 2008 voting guide, and an election-night scorecard.

The book is written from the viewpoint of a main-stream conservative (sometimes called “neocon”) viewpoint, so all political conservatives everywhere may not necessarily agree with absolutely every point Mark W. Smith makes; however as a resource, the information is invaluable. Smith’s straight-talk, to-the-point style, and dry humor make the manual easy to reference and fun to read.

Since the book is geared toward the 2008 elections, Smith has done an excellent job of covering the most relevant issues, but I would very much like to read more from this author in an off-election year on some other issues that are vitally important to the conservative movement, such as our educational system, the re-writing of our United States history, and the role of religion in government. Mark has done an excellent job of periodically updating this manual as needed; let’s hope he keeps ‘em coming!

Steve Dobbins has been bearing the brunt of that switch. He’s president and CEO of Carolina Mills, a 75-year-old North Carolina company that supplies thread, yarn, and textile finishing to apparel makers–half of which supply Wal-Mart. Carolina Mills grew steadily until 2000. But in the past three years, as its customers have gone either overseas or out of business, it has shrunk from 17 factories to 7, and from 2,600 employees to 1,200. Dobbins’s customers have begun to face imported clothing sold so cheaply to Wal-Mart that they could not compete even if they paid their workers nothing.

Here’s the comment I wrote for this article (I fixed a few typos and tweaked the formatting to make it work for this blog, because the comment form accompanying the article did not allow HTML):

I used to shop at Wal-Mart, back in their “Buy American” days. I stopped when I noticed that the good brands disappeared and the quality of everything in the store began getting worse and worse.

In essence, Wal-Mart is forcing their suppliers to outsource everything overseas, to destroy whatever reputation for quality they once had, and to become dependent on Wal-Mart. Then Wal-Mart makes the relationship unprofitable.

Here`s the solution:

Never buy anything at Wal-Mart [or, for that matter, Sam's Club].

If you`re so broke that you can`t afford anything better, then go to a flea market or a second-hand store, or do without. How much clutter do you really need, anyway?

For the holidays, give your child one good toy, or a good book or game, from somewhere else, not five pieces of cheap, breakable, poorly-designed garbage from Wal-Mart.

If you`re a supplier, don`t start doing business with Wal-Mart. Find ways to survive and prosper without getting sucked into their system.

If you`re a journalist of any type, report more stories like this about what Wal-Mart is doing to America`s manufacturing base, communities, employment prospects, and reputation for quality.

Expose the abysmal quality of the outsourced rubbish that American firms are importing from places such as China, partly or wholly in response to pressure from Wal-Mart. The lead paint fiasco is only the beginning.

There are a lot more scandals if you want to look for them. Follow the money! Just for starters: Look at political contributions. Look at where their employees are getting their health care.

Finally, please stop comparing Wal-Mart to companies such as A&P that maintained a reputation for quality during the era when they were able to out-compete other companies.

Remember: If cost is your only consideration, everything turns into a race to the bottom. You will eventually end up spending all your money on a lot of junk, none of which would be worth the price even if it were free!

In a nutshell, an innocent traveler saw someone exhibiting bizarre behavior on an airliner. He reported what he saw, but then, the FBI hauled him in as the suspect. The FBI eventually let him go and considers the matter “resolved.” Naturally, since he’s pro-American and not a jihadist, the ACLU is uninterested in helping him recover damages.
Thanks to lax background checks, even after 9/11, the Hezbollah spy who managed to obtain sensitive jobs at the FBI and CIA is not the first terrorist supporter to infiltrate the U.S. government.

An alleged al-Qaida operative also infiltrated the Environmental Protection Agency, according to federal investigators and court documents obtained by WND.

The case, details of which are revealed here for the first time, involves Waheeda Tehseen, a Pakistani national who obtained a sensitive position with the EPA in Washington as a toxicologist even though she was not a U.S. citizen.

Free book available in PDF format, courtesy of Andy Wilcoxson:

Gen. Mihailovic’s only crime was resisting the twin evils of Hitler’s fascism and Stalin’s communism.

. . .

“Because the book is out of print and the publisher went out of business more than 50 years ago copies of it are hard to come by, so I scanned my copy, and through the magic of the Internet you can download your own copy of the book in PDF format by right clicking this link and selecting “Save Target As” (please note file is 137 MB).”

. . .

General Mihailovich fell seventeen months after the so-called “liberation” of Yugoslavia. Reports from Belgrade on March 24th, 1946, announced his capture under puzzling circumstances on March 13th, 1946. His trial before a Communist military court began on June 10th, 1946. He was “sentenced” to death on July 15th, 1946, and murdered on July 17th, 1946.

General Mihailovich is no more. He has departed this world convinced that he was abandoned by the Allies. The voices that were raised abroad in his defence were not allowed to reach him and he died without the satisfaction of knowing that in the opinion of many he died an innocent man and a great soldier.

General Mihailovich is no more, but the legends of his heroic deeds are becoming more and more popular and they live in the hearts of the people.

General Mihailovich is no more. He has departed this world. Those who have murdered him have not only perpetrated a crime, they have also committed a grave mistake, for democratic public opinion is well aware of General Mihailovich’s merits.

General Mihailovich is no more. The last words of this great patriot were concise and poignant. He said:

“I strove for much, I undertook much, but the gales of the world have carried away both me and my work.”
